My interests have always lain in the imaginary and the magical. I am interested in the possibility of a life beyond that which we can easily see and hear, the idea that there is much more to life on Earth than that which human science can explain. Through my work as an artist I am trying to explore the possibilities and delve into the depths of human imagination. Our imaginations are where we truly let go, where we as human beings explore and embrace possibility. The idea of ‘letting go’ of the constraints of society is something that I feel can be explored through artwork. People are always looking for ways to escape from their everyday concerns, whether it be immersing themselves in a feature film on a big screen, going on holiday to a desert island, or taking hallucinogenic drugs. These moments are, I believe, when humans actually take control of themselves and explore their own inner selves without the rules and regulations of ‘life’ controlling them.
In the past I have explored these ideas through installations with a spiritual feel, using religious and mythological imagery to conjure feelings of both peace and awe. Using candles, oil, gold leaf, angel wings and other such religious signifiers brings a certain hallowed atmosphere into a piece of work and as such puts the viewer into the right frame of mind with which to approach the piece.
Imagined places and dreamscapes can be good starting points for exploration of the imagination and escape into our selves, and I have begun to explore this with a series of paintings of simplified, half-imagined, half-seen places. Having refined the scenes to their basic elements, I found the viewer was able to respond to them more easily – they found something in them that related to their own experience or memory.
Most recently I have begun to reread some of the classic children’s books (Gulliver’s Travels, The Secret Garden, Peter Pan and The Chronicles of Narnia) and found that they are just as magical to me now as they were when I was a child. I wanted to use this feeling to try and create something that would be accessible to all ages and have begun to make paper cut-outs of imagined landscapes and scenes inside small boxes lit from behind. These boxes are reminiscent of Japanese shadow puppets, the mysterious hand-held paper creatures that dance and move behind a curtain to the delight and wonder of their audience. They also have references to Victorian paper dioramas, used to intrigue and fascinate guests with their intricacy.
